When Evidence Goes Viral

Facebook can do many things. It can share the pride of parents with a new baby, smiles at graduation, and the joy of happy faces on a vacation. But we have hit new territory which is the lowest of the low.

A Florida man who allegedly killed his wife and then posted a photo of her dead body on Facebook.

This is an example of my growing concern about social media ethics, and people using Facebook and other platforms to put themselves on display---or to ridicule others.

In this case 31 year old Derek Medina posted a picture of Jennifer Alfonso's blood-stained body to his Facebook feed with a note, according to authorities:

"I’m going to prison or death sentence for killing my wife love you guys miss you guys take care Facebook people you will see me in the news."

Are people doing things like this for a thrill? Are they so gruesome they are looking for instantaneous gratification? Are we so fascinated with the life and death of other people we have become voyeuristic?

Reports say the disgusting image stayed online and was passed along for at least five hours.

This is the dark side of social media. We can use it for good or we can use it for evil. How will you use it?
